Made in Code: Reimagining the Experience of Fashion

The University of the Arts London

A pioneering exploration of the intersection between fashion and digital technology, culminating in an immersive prototype installation that combines motion capture, fabric simulation, and digital rendering to create personalized avatars dressed in virtual garments.

The project “Made in Code: Reimagining the Experience of Fashion” explores the potential of digital technologies in the fashion industry, offering an alternative and experimental perspective on the experience of fashion design. Presented as a prototype installation at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in March 2023, the project offered an immersive experience combining motion capture, fabric simulation, and digital rendering to create personalized avatars dressed in virtual garments.

The initiative allowed visitors to see their own movements translated in real time into digital figures, thanks to marker-less technology developed by Move AI. These avatars were then “dressed” in digital creations designed by British fashion designer Maria Grachvogel. The advanced fabric simulation enabled the garments to move in a realistic and fluid way, showcasing the power of digital fashion to enhance the aesthetic and sensory experience, particularly in performative and cultural contexts.

Made in Code stands as a significant example of how the synergy between art, fashion, and technological innovation can generate new expressive languages and participatory experiences, outlining a new dimension for fashion in the digital age.
