Object Parasites
Libera Università di Bolzano
What would happen if artificial objects behaved like real parasites?
A speculative project that explores the concept of objects acting as parasites within the domestic ecosystem.
The “Object Parasites” project critically and provocatively explores the interaction between household objects and connected technologies. Its aim is to stimulate a critical reflection on the dynamics of interconnection between technological devices and our relationship with them.
These “parasitic objects” are designed to exist within domestic environments by attaching themselves to common items such as lamps, refrigerators, or computers. Their operation depends on other devices; they activate only when another object is in use, or autonomously manipulate some of its functions. The result is a tangible and concrete reflection on device interconnectivity and the user’s loss of control.
Through this approach, the project invites consideration of the ethical and social implications related to the Internet of Things (IoT) and the growing automation of our daily lives. It serves as a provocation, prompting users to reflect on how technology influences our habits, relationships, and the very structure of our living spaces.
The project not only highlights the potential and risks of technological integration, but also proposes a new perspective on object design, encouraging greater awareness and responsibility in the adoption of emerging technologies.
