+Andscape

Aalto University

An interactive installation designed to stimulate children’s imagination and active participation through the use of augmented reality combined with sand modeling to create three-dimensional landscapes.

The project “+Andscape – AR Sandbox and Zones of Participation” presents an interactive installation that merges physical and digital elements to stimulate children’s imagination and encourage their active participation. At the heart of the experience is a sandbox—a physical sand container—that comes to life through a projection and augmented reality system, transforming into a dynamic landscape. The surfaces manually shaped by the children are instantly enhanced by a colorful projection that reacts in real time to changes in the sand’s height and shape, generating an interactive and multisensory environment.

In addition to the visual aspect, the installation incorporates sound components and a mobile light that moves across the sandbox following patterns defined by software, thus creating an immersive setting that stimulates not only sight but also hearing and touch. This playful and narrative-driven approach turns the act of playing into an opportunity to explore stories and build imaginary worlds through tangible interaction with the material and fellow participants.

+Andscape stands as an engaging example of how technology can be meaningfully and effectively integrated into educational design.
