The green carpet
HfG Offenbach
The project explores the use of algae as a sustainable resource to transform indoor environments. It involves an algae farm and a solar curtain that harnesses the natural photosynthesis process of algae to alter the light effect in a space, creating areas of shade, color, and light diffusion.
“The Green Carpet” is a project that explores the use of algae as a living material for design and sustainability. The project proposes an innovative application of algae, transforming them into a natural curtain system that uses photosynthesis to regulate indoor lighting.
The project goes beyond aesthetics, as algae, thanks to their photosynthetic properties, can produce oxygen and absorb CO2, contributing to direct environmental improvement. The design integrates with nature, creating a solution that is not only ecological but also functional, adaptable to various types of environments.
The uniqueness of this project also lies in its accessibility. Thanks to its open-source approach, The Green Carpet allows anyone to replicate and customize the system, making this sustainable innovation available to all. In this way, it provides a concrete alternative to traditional design, applying the principles of circular economy and promoting the use of local natural resources.
With its creative and scientific approach, The Green Carpet challenges the conventions of interior design, transforming the idea of decoration into a process that not only enriches the environment visually but also actively contributes to the health of the planet. This project demonstrates how design can evolve to address the environmental challenges of our time, encouraging a dialogue between technological innovation, ecology, and human well-being.
