Ekos: The Path to Resilience
The New School university
A collaborative board game designed to explore urban resilience and climate change adaptation. The game promotes systemic thinking and social justice through role-playing and participatory design.
“Ekos” is a multiplayer board game designed to stimulate reflection and learning on the topics of urban resilience, climate change adaptation, and social justice.
The game takes place in a future urban context, where participants assume the roles of six key actors: Speaker of the City Council, Urban Planner, Community Organizer, Ecologist, Designer, and Modeler. Each player has a specific mission and must collaborate with others to design and build resilient systems that can tackle extreme events such as heatwaves, floods, blackouts, and pandemics. The game mechanism alternates between building social, ecological, and technological systems (SETS) and responding to unforeseen events, represented by event cards.
The game not only offers a playful experience but also serves as an educational tool to understand the complexity of urban systems and the importance of resilience and equity in city planning. Through Ekos, participants can explore nature-based solutions, green infrastructures, and climate change adaptation strategies, gaining skills to address the environmental and social challenges of contemporary cities.
