Participatory Data Physicalization

Libera Università di Bolzano

The project explores an innovative approach to data communication by transforming information into physical and multisensory artifacts, actively engaging citizens while making the data both accessible and understandable.

The project “Participatory Data Physicalization” introduces a new way of representing and communicating data through physical artifacts and tactile interactions. In an era dominated by an overload of digital information and visualizations, the project aims to overcome the barriers to data comprehension by transforming them into sensory experiences that actively engage people.

Graphic visualization is conveyed through tactile and visual experiences that stimulate a deeper understanding. This approach enabled the creation of a personalized and engaging experience, in which each participant contributed to the collective construction of the data’s meaning.
A key element of the project is the adoption of a participatory approach, where citizens are not merely recipients of information but co-creators of the communication process.

Participatory Data Physicalization stands as a powerful tool for democratizing access to data and encouraging active civic engagement around complex and pressing issues. It proposes a new paradigm in data communication, in which physical interaction and active participation become essential elements for facilitating understanding and fostering dialogue.
