Orange peel

The project explores the potential of orange peels as a sustainable resource in the packaging industry. Every year, tons of citrus peels are discarded as industrial waste despite their rich content of essential oils and fibers.
“Orange Peel” explores the world of orange peels and their potential as a sustainable resource for food packaging. Every year, tons of citrus peels are discarded as industrial waste, despite being rich in essential oils and fibers. Thurnau proposes a circular alternative that transforms this byproduct into a biodegradable material, offering an innovative and eco-friendly solution.
The project shifts the perspective where the peel is always seen as waste, instead valuing it as a raw material for creating sustainable food containers. The resulting material retains the natural color and scent of the orange, creating a unique sensory experience and strengthening the connection between packaging and content. Fully compostable, this material can be disposed of without negative environmental impacts. In this way, the project directly addresses the problem of packaging waste, offering a viable alternative to traditional synthetic materials.
The project fits within the realm of biodesign, demonstrating how design can become a catalyst for change within production chains.
