Collective Loops

École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs

An interactive installation that transforms the audience into musical co-creators, using their smartphones to participate in a collaborative loop sequence, exploring new forms of social and creative interaction in digital art.

“Collective Loops” is an experimental installation that presents a collaborative version of an eight-step sequencer, allowing up to eight participants to connect via their smartphones to a local web page and create simple melodies in real time within a shared environment.

Once connected, participants can use a smartphone interface to select one of the available time intervals in the sequencer. A second interface then allows them to choose musical notes, which will be played by the device when the selected interval is triggered by the sequencer’s regular timing. This setup encourages interaction among participants, fostering collective creativity and musical co-creation.

The work has been presented on several occasions, including the Ircam Forum Workshops in November 2015, where it attracted attention for its ability to engage the public in a shared musical experience.

Collective Loops not only explores new modes of interaction between audience and artwork, but also offers a reflection on how digital technologies can transform the role of the public from passive observers to active participants.
