Fragile Water

Aalto University

A new initiative designed to raise public awareness about the vulnerability of global water resources through small glass artworks that tell the story of the fragility of freshwater supplies around the world.

Fragile Water” was developed through the collaborative exchange between students and researchers, with the aim of translating complex scientific issues into visual and interactive experiences.

The outcome of the project resulted in an exhibition featuring objects and artworks made of glass — a material symbolically chosen to represent fragility of freshwater resources.

This initiative serves as a concrete example of how education, art, and research can converge to address contemporary environmental challenges, providing the public with tools to understand and appreciate the need to protect water resources for future generations, while also encouraging critical reflection on the issue. The topics covered included hidden water in food, the distribution of water resources, endangered rivers, urban water, and the circular water cycle. Each theme was explored from unique perspectives, offering the public a deeper understanding of the importance of water in our daily lives.
